Mile
Markers on the Interstate system:
The
DOTD, in partnership with the RPC and the OPCD, are creating a
system of “mile markers” at 2/10-mile intervals along the
interstate highway system in Orleans and surrounding parishes.
“These signs are large enough to be seen from a distance and are
reflective for night visibility” says John Adams OPCD GIS
Specialist who spearheaded the project.. Each sign displays the
highway shield, direction and mile number plus fraction thereof.
Often the problem facing citizens who get into trouble on the
Interstate is that there are no visible addresses, cross
streets, or nearby landmarks with which to determine their
location in the event a 9-1-1 call is necessary. Once roadside
installation of the signs is completed, and their locations
incorporated into a 9-1-1 Computer Aided Dispatch system, these
mile markers will assist in providing the exact location of a
caller who passes the sign’s information to the complaint
operator.
